THE ROLE OF TEXTURE AND PATTERN IN INTERIOR DESIGN
At AVD, we believe that texture and pattern are not just decorative choices but essential elements in creating a space that feels both dynamic and inviting. These components serve to elevate the look and feel of a room, bringing depth, contrast, and personality. Whether it’s through the use of wallpaper, fabrics, drapery, paneling, or flooring, incorporating the right textures and patterns can transform any space from ordinary to extraordinary.
why texture and pattern matter
Both texture and pattern have unique roles in interior design. Texture appeals to our sense of touch, influencing how we feel within a space. Patterns, on the other hand, appeal to our visual senses, drawing the eye and guiding movement through the room. Together, they create a balance that adds layers of interest and keeps a room from feeling flat or one-dimensional.
While color sets the tone of a room, it’s the texture and pattern that bring the room to life. They can make a neutral space feel warm, cozy, and engaging or provide the drama needed to give a bold, vibrant room even more impact. One of our project- AVDRosedale beautifully illustrates how texture and pattern can be expertly layered to achieve a dynamic yet balanced aesthetic.
Layering with texture for depth & warmth
In the dining area of this project, we focused on layering various textures to create a cozy, inviting atmosphere. The smooth, light wood cabinetry forms the base of the room, providing a calm, natural backdrop. On the walls, a textured peach-toned wallpaper adds a subtle softness that contrasts with the sleek lines of the cabinetry. Upholstered black chairs introduce a tactile quality, while the chandelier, with its intricate details, acts as an art piece in its own right, adding both texture and visual interest overhead.
By incorporating textures that range from soft fabrics to smooth surfaces and metallic accents, we were able to create a room that feels both elegant and comfortable. The light wood flooring further enhances this feeling, balancing the darker elements with its warmth and natural beauty.
playful patterns bring personality
Pattern is an often-overlooked design element, but when used thoughtfully, it can inject personality and charm into any room. The powder room in this home exemplifies how bold pattern choices can transform a small space. The whimsical wallpaper featuring artistic motifs adds energy and life, turning the bathroom into a playful retreat. While the design is bold, it remains balanced by the simplicity of the light wood vanity, which grounds the space and ensures that the pattern doesn't overwhelm.
This approach to pattern is echoed in the geometric floor tiles, which introduce a secondary layer of pattern that complements rather than competes with the wallpaper. Together, these elements create a space that feels vibrant and fresh, yet cohesive and well thought out.
BOLD BUT BALANCED
The use of bold cabinetry in a deep, rich navy blue creates a striking contrast with the brass hardware, adding a sense of luxury and sophistication. The subtle pattern of the backsplash adds dimension without overpowering the overall design, providing just the right amount of texture to balance the smooth surfaces.
The soft rug on the floor introduces a third layer of texture, bringing warmth and comfort into the space. Its carefully chosen pattern adds visual interest, while the overall palette of blues and neutrals ties the room together, creating a space that feels both modern and timeless.
AND TO WRAP UP
Through strategic layering of textures and thoughtful incorporation of patterns, we were able to transform this home into a visually engaging space. Whether it’s a bold wallpaper choice in a powder room or the subtle interplay of materials in a dining area, texture and pattern play crucial roles in defining the mood and style of a space.
At AVD, we love the challenge of turning what might seem like simple design choices into artful compositions. Each project allows us to explore new ways to make homes feel lived-in yet curated, blending function with beauty to create spaces that are truly personal and timeless.
