AVD’S APPROACH TO CREATE SPACES THAT INSPIRE

At AVD, every project we undertake is a journey from concept to completion, each with its unique set of inspirations, challenges, and creative decisions. Our goal is to create spaces that are not only visually stunning but also deeply personal and inspiring. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how we bring these spaces to life, with a spotlight on one of our recent projects.- AVDRideau

The Inspiration: Merging Styles for a Warm, Inviting Space

When our client reached out to us mid-renovation, they were in the midst of downsizing from a larger home to a stylish yet warm and inviting condo in the beautiful Rideau neighborhood of Calgary, AB. The condo, located on the top floor of a building with stunning natural light and views, had a modern, streamlined look that needed just the right touches to feel like home.

Our design philosophy has always embraced a blend of styles, and this project was no exception. The client’s desire for a space that felt both stylish and welcoming led us to a design that was a modern take on mid-century modern, balancing clean lines with organic elements to create a sophisticated, timeless look.

The Creative Process: From Concept to Completion

Furniture Selection and Layering

Furniture: We began by selecting key furniture pieces that would anchor the space. The round marble dining table and upholstered chairs were chosen for their classic mid-century modern shapes, while the use of natural materials like wood and marble added warmth and texture. The custom-built sofa and coffee table, paired with the client’s antique pieces, created a beautifully layered look that is characteristic of AVD’s signature style.

Lighting: Lighting played a crucial role in the overall design. The pendant lamp over the dining table, with its curved shape and neutral color, added a touch of modern elegance while maintaining the mid-century vibe. We also changed other lighting fixtures throughout the space to incorporate finishes with more patina, giving the home a slightly aged, less “new” feel.

Warming Up the Space

Plaster Treatment: One of the most transformative elements of this project was the plaster treatment on the tray ceiling. This not only added a gorgeous texture but also brought a sense of warmth and depth to the space. The textured ceiling became a focal point, grounding the modern lines of the architecture with a more traditional, artisanal touch.

Artwork and Decor: Carefully curated artwork was essential in tying the space together. In the living room, pieces by Murray Duncan added a vibrant, contemporary feel, while a Jessalyn Brooks drawing in the dining area introduced a softer, more intimate mood. These artworks, combined with natural decor elements like plants and vases, contributed to the overall warmth and inviting atmosphere.

Challenges and Creative Solutions

Every project has its challenges, and this one was no different. The principal bedroom, for example, presented a challenge with its limited space. To address this, we designed a custom built-in bed with curved design details and an upholstered headboard, maximizing the available space while maintaining the aesthetic integrity of the room. The use of warm, light oak and plaster-finished walls, along with wall-to-wall drapery, transformed the bedroom into a haven for the client—a place to relax and retreat.

Conclusion: The AVD Difference

This project is a testament to our commitment to working closely with our clients, understanding their needs, and bringing their vision to life. Whether it’s through the selection of furniture, the choice of materials, or the careful curation of artwork, we strive to create spaces that are as unique and personal as the people who live in them.
