Design Crush – Lievito, Beijing

If the pizza wasn’t enough of a reason to check this place out, the interior will do the trick with its clean lines and consistent use of terrazzo. Introducing Lievito, a gourmet pizza restaurant in Beijing!

Lievito is a gourmet pizza restaurant and bar located in Beijing. It was designed by MDDM Studio, and Italian-German architectural practice. Being on the main floor of a hotel, the entrance opens by the lobby and stretches the opposite end of the hotel with a view of the river off the terrace.

The exterior reflects the interior with a grey terrazzo as its main material. Gold accents are used sparingly to make what’s important stand out, such as the signage.

Through the entrance, a neutral palette is noticeable. The selected materials distinguish what the customer should look at and directs them where to go. The lack of colour does not take away from the aesthetic of the restaurant but rather emphasizes the clean lines in the structural forms and in the black steel incorporated in the furniture.

An interesting use of shape and form is used in the coffee table near the patio. The base fits with the rest of the flooring while letting the gold plate on the top surface is off-center in this social spot.

The best restaurants use a variety of different seating for different groups of people. There is a spot to lounge outside, lounge inside, bar seating by the kitchen, bar seating off to the side, and banquette seating. This array of eating invites people of all ages and encourages intimate dining or a social gathering.

Between the masses of the structure, the space feels elevated. This is because having a consistent use of terrazzo, no mass feels too heavy. Overall, the brass finishes divide the large use of terrazzo and the freestanding furniture compliments the space, resulting in a balanced and elegant space.
