Project of the Month – Mount Pleasant 2 Residence

Project of the Month – Mount Pleasant 2 Residence

With a bold dramatic kitchen, black slat wall detail that runs all the way up the staircase and the gorgeous midcentury fire orb, there is a lot to take in. All these custom elements are accented with a boho vibe with furniture and decor that gives the space a relaxed atmosphere. So happy to share this space with you.

This home was a collaboration, built from the ground up, with Alloy Homes in the Mount Pleasant area of Calgary. With the large amount of natural light in the open concept living space, we opted for black kitchen cabinets for some much needed drama. The mixture of black, light wood and white cabinetry shows that you really can mix certain finishes without making it look too busy. Peaking behind the floor to ceiling cabinets is the butler’s pantry. This small area is simple and cohesive with the kitchen as to not take away from the beautiful island and kitchen faucets. You may not know it but beyond the butler’s pantry, is a small mudroom; conveniently built for bringing groceries in from the car to the fridge.

The open concept home is well equipped for social gatherings. For this, there are some key components: island seating, adjacent dining table, bar cart and a rotating orb fireplace. At AVD, we incorporating colour into our modern and neutral homes through the use of decor. For instance, we’ve included bright abstract paintings and earthy tones in pillows and florals. These hints of colour create a relaxed atmosphere in an otherwise sophisticated space.

For smaller and more private spaces, we’ve elevated them primarily through the selection of finishes and accessories. The entrance has the necessities for an inviting environment; bench, pillows, art and a rug. These items do so much in showing what is in store for the rest of the home. Next to the front door is an office space with a barn door. This simple room is enhanced with lamps and, of course, art. The “other” bathrooms in this home remain simple and unified with light wood cabinets, white quartz countertop and white tile. We specified geometric wall tile and marble-like subway tile that runs all the way to the ceiling to make the space feel more spacious. The black slat wall detail that runs all the way up the staircase is another feature that increases the volume in the home. Details like this are a great option for wall treatments and avoid closing in small areas. Above all else, the light fixtures add character. Where finishes are the same, a sconce or pendant can be a statement.

The master bedroom is a retreat in itself. The spacious bedroom has a panoramic view of the streets with large windows surrounding. This also makes the room light and airy. Hues of blue are incorporated in the bedding for a calm setting. The connecting ensuite embraces all the drama, similar to the kitchen. The ensuite includes black marble surround tile in the shower and floors,  a free-standing tub, brass plumbing fixtures and some accessories that make this bathroom gorgeous and welcoming.

We are so happy with how this project turned out. The balance of elegance and drama still leaves us in ‘aw’!
